Recent studies have linked Medtronic’s controversial Infuse Bone Graft to a number of serious injuries that the company allegedly tried to hide from the public. Complications associated with the Infuse have been reported to include cancer, male infertility, uncontrolled bone growth, airway swelling and compression, nerve damage, and death. The Infuse Bone Graft Attorneys at Schmidt & Clark, LLP, are currently investigating potential lawsuits on behalf of patients who suffered these and other injuries after being treated with the Medtronic Infuse Bone Graft.

What’s the Problem with the Infuse Bone Graft?
In July 2008, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release stating that the Infuse Bone Graft had caused serious problems when it was used off-label in cervical spine fusion surgeries. The administration said it received at least 38 adverse event reports (AERS) of side effects associated with the Infuse, the vast majority of which involved swelling of the neck and throat tissue, which resulted in compression of the airway and other structures in the neck. Additionally, patients reported difficulty swallowing, breathing, and speaking after being treated with the Infuse. Several required emergency treatment, including tracheotomies and the insertion of feeding tubes, as well as secondary revision surgeries. Most serious side effects occurred less than two weeks after surgery.

Medtronic Accused of Manipulating Infuse Safety Data
According to a recent report issued by the Senate Finance Committee, Medtronic paid over $210 million over the past 14 years in ‘consulting’ fees to doctors who wrote medical articles that downplayed the potential health complications associated with the Infuse Bone Graft. A comprehensive investigation conducted by the committee found that the company played a significant role in ‘drafting, editing and shaping the content’ of medical articles that were supposed to be objective, resulting in an inaccurate portrayal of the Infuse’s possible side effects. The reported concluded by faulting Medtronic for its blatant disregard for public safety, citing an e-mail message from a company employee which urged that a complete list of Infuse’s potential complications not be published.
